Choosing a reading level for one book

Reading level is set per book, so changing it for one story never changes your default level for the next one.

Overview

Reading level is a per-book setting, not a global one. If you bump one story up to Advanced, every other book in your library stays exactly where you left it, and your default level for books you add later doesn't change either.

For what each level actually changes in the text, see What are Reading Levels?. This article is just about where and how to set the level for a book you're already reading.

Where to change it

In the reader. Open a chapter and look at the chapter header. The level picker shows up there as a dropdown labeled with your current level's name (Simple, Guided, Natural, Advanced, or Faithful). Tap or click it to switch.

The picker doesn't appear on the book's title page or end page. There's no translated content on either page, so a level picker there wouldn't have anything to do.

In the library. Open the book's detail view and you'll find the same level setting there.

On a Lexxio Original, before you add it. Originals show their level picker as chips right on the title page, so you can choose a level before the book is even in your library.

Simplified adaptation label

At Simple or Guided, you'll notice a small amber "Simplified adaptation" label next to the picker. It's a reminder that these two levels involve real simplification, not just an easier vocabulary applied word for word. Sentences get shortened and some grammar gets rephrased to fit the level.

Tips

  • Switching a book's level doesn't affect your placement or your default for new books. Each book remembers its own level independently.
  • If a book doesn't have the level you want yet, Lexxio translates it for you when you switch. See Why don't all books have every level? for what that involves.
